I seem to have written a new story. Pentilyet, for a change. You can find The Dance up on AO3.

“I do not dance,” said Cassandra firmly.
“Oh, come now” said Josephine, sighing. “Can you expect us to believe that Nevarran princesses are not taught such elementary skills?”
“I went to the Seekers when I was twelve years old,” said Cassandra, scowling. She did not mention that the seekers also taught dancing, believing it to be a useful diplomatic tool. That was not relevant.
“If Cassandra cannot or will not dance, she doesn’t need to,” said Lavellan impatiently then. “I’m not certain why I need to, either.”
That brought both Josephine and Leliana’s attention right back to her, which suited Cassandra perfectly.

This is a bit of a pre-Wintersend treat, for @sweettasteofbitter, because they are wonderful and I wanted to give them a treat…
BUUUUUUUT then I went and accidentally TOLD the Wintersend pinch-hit group I was writing this treat, because Your Old Auntie here doesn’t understand how these Google Group things work (and/or I can’t follow clear instructions for interacting with the group, sigh). And I thought, you know, I don’t want to taint the pure waters of the Wintersend Exchange with my non-anonymous non-surprise treat.

I wanted to write something fluffy so I wrote a first kiss. Will I ever stop loving these two? I don’t think so.

They meet on Skyhold’s battlements underneath the starry dome of the sky. The moons are bright, the planets aligned. Down below, the steep cliffs of the mountains stretch out until they disappear into a black nocturnal void.

“Ambassador,” Cassandra says. “You wanted to see me?”

She fails at the pretense, uncomfortable with how unfamiliar it is to her. She keeps a neutral tone in case the words she has been hoping for will not be uttered tonight. She is, however, rudely betrayed by her own physique. Her voice doesn’t waver, but her hand gestures become more awkward, more frequent. She straightens her back, scrambling to preserve her dignity despite her discomfort.

Only one more chapter to go, and it will be posted on Thursday.

Such a bargain is not fair, says Cassandra. It is all a lie. She does not know quite what she means by that, but she knows it is important.

You ask what I mean when I say I’m changing, and becoming something. But I can’t tell you, because I don’t know what I’m becoming. I’m not sure I even know what I was. Daughter, mercenary, Herald, Inquisitor… none of these are me. They are, and they aren’t. They aren’t enough. I feel so strange and unsettled in myself, as if I am a host of strangers all in one body.
The only thing I can hold to without question is that I am yours. I love you. If I ever do not love you, I will not be myself.

Happy Valentine’s day/femslash february, here’s a really short written thing to celebrate these cuties! <:o)

Cassandra is, by rule rather than exception, warm. Unless she has spent a long time under the mercy of the gales that reign over the wintry peaks of the Frostbacks, her body seems to radiate a perpetual, though not unhealthy, fever.

Physical proximity makes Cassandra an excellent stand-in for a hearth, even if it is just as much as her hands and breath effectively warming Josephine’s icy fingers, or her chest pressed protectively against Josephine’s back, hands happily wrinkling the golden fabric at her hips before twirling her around and gathering her close once more, their laughter filling the room.

Judge sides with Sixties Scoop survivors:

In siding with the plaintiffs, Ontario Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba found Canada had breached its “duty of care” to the children. … Belobaba was scathing in commenting on the government’s contention that consultation with the bands would not have made any difference to the children.“This is an odd and, frankly, insulting submission,” Belobaba wrote. “Canada appears to be saying that even if the extension of child welfare services to their reserves had been fully explained to the Indian bands and, if each band had been genuinely consulted about their concerns in this regard, that no meaningful advice or ideas would have been forthcoming.”

This is incredibly important, and a major win for indigenous peoples. Read the articles linked from this one to get a sense of just how awful this bit of Canadian history was, and why the win is so important in the recognition of First Nations rights. Far too many non-aboriginal Canadians know nothing about these issues.
